Sustainability - My 3 Reasons Why

Feline Instinct - Reciprocity - Privilege

The word ‘sustainability’ has become ubiquitous. You cannot drive down the street, turn on an electronic device or speak to a school kid without seeing or hearing it. For me, rather than being a mere buzzword, it has been a core part of my life for the past 15 years.  As a passionate advocate of a better future, I find three core reasons that drive me to create positive change. These reasons form the foundation of Sustainable Home Loans.

 Feline Instinct

When my kids were small, we watched allot of David Attenborough nature documentaries.  There was one episode that followed a lioness and her cubs. The cubs spent their time playfighting, wrestling and jumping all over her, but she didn’t even bat an eyelid, until her cubs were in danger, then she became this ferocious beast, ready to battle even the fiercest of enemies. The kids turned around to me and said ‘that is like you mum’. They were right. This is true for me and probably most parents. The instinct to protect and fight for my kids’ (and all other kids) future is deeply ingrained in me.

Reciprocity

I have always loved being outdoors in nature. Not only am I in awe of the beauty and intricate balance of the ecosystem but I am grateful for what she provides. Without the air, nourishment and shelter that she has given us, we would have nothing. In turn, I believe that it is our responsibility to respect that gift by adopting sustainable practices. Trashing the source of our sustenance is not only ungrateful but detrimental to the survival of all life on earth. By nurturing reciprocity with nature, we can create a harmonious co-existence.

Privilege

When people think of sustainability they think about the environment, but just as important social responsibility. I spend allot of time listing to podcasts – many fun ones but mainly the global news and the economist (nerd that I am). I am completely amazed at the atrocities in the world, lack of human rights and prejudice against women and minority groups. We are so incredibly privileged, that it is our duty to help others. Creating a more equitable society is intertwined with achieving sustainability for all.

Perspective

While my personal journey towards sustainability was influenced by my experiences as a parent, my appreciation for natures wonders, and my passion for social justice, I understand that each person’s motivations may vary. I am committed to listening to the unique perspectives of my clients’ partners and staff, which not only broadens my horizons but enables me to align my efforts with their values.

Admittedly, I still have a long way to go on my journey towards sustainability and do many things wrong, but by working together we can help each other to create a lasting legacy of positive change for generations to come.
